Working to end the stigma and discrimination of mental illness.

Charlene’s Story

Happy Mother's Day!

I am proud of my mother who is 80 years old. Nearly 40 years ago, my mother was diagnosed as manic depressive (bipolar).  Society shunned her; she has been ashamed of herself because of her illness.  If you met her, you would not see the insecurity she feels, therefore she would prefer that others do not know of her illness. Yet, through the love of her children, and eventually grandchildren and great grandchildren, she has a place in the world. Her world is small, but none the less important.  One day, I would like anyone who has a mental illness to be proud of the value they have added to the world.  I would like the stigma to be removed, so people like my mother can stand proud without a label.  Through my mother’s illness I have learned to be a kind and loving person. There are too many people in our society who are lost, shunned and lonely because of mental illness, my prayers are for them.

 Happy Mother's Day Mom!
