Linda’s Story
I've been working in the mental health field for some years as a licensed therapist. Although my colleagues are a great bunch of caring people there is even stigma within. My husband has bipolar and my mom died of Alzheimer's disease. I know many of you understand the suffering and devastation that can occur in living day to day with these illnesses. Odd/sad thing at our practice, even other therapists seem to have a difficult time in asking how things are going and seem uncomfortable if someone does share information or feelings. Sadly it seems to be universal. Conversley, if someone has a loved one with a disease considered strictly physical there is no end to the inquiries and expressions of concern, As stated, they are good people, excellent clinicians with clients and I'm sure they struggle with this internally on some level. It is a deeply rooted stigma and I'm very grateful for this forum. I'll utilize these materials when I return to practice from my surgical leave (for one of the many stress-induced illnesses). Thank you! Linda
