Megan’s Story
I'm 24 years old and have suffered from depression since middle school. When I was 20 I knew I wasn't coping with my problem well so I hospitalized myself to get the treatment I needed. It was a hard decision because of the stigma surrounding being in a mental hospital but I had one amazing friend who told me how proud of me he was for doing what I needed to do dispite the stigma. It was at this time that I was diagnosed bipolar and found out the diagnosis of depression wasn't correct. Since then its been a weight off my mind to have the correct diagnosis. It's still a battle and medications have been adjusted but now I know what to expect. I'm so happy that there are people out there like my former employer Dr. Henry Chu of San Antonio where they specialize in treatment of special needs and complex medical patients and teach every employee acceptance and people first language. Sometimes its hard to get the help you need but it can only improve your way of life and there are people out there that have dropped the stigma.
